July Meet-Up Recap and Other News

The Fargo Game Makers meet-up returned this month to the newly established Prairie Den space (formerly CoCo co-working space) with a record attendance of 35 people this month!

Attendees got to check out the games that were created during the 24 Hour Game Jam. One playable game was a version of the classic Warlords game for Atari, that could have 4 people play at once. A sci-fi level was playable, and new fun variations were planned.

Another playable game was a digital graphic novel, where players would navigate a series of conversations and learn more about a group trying to cause the eventual collapse of the universe.

Next, we got to hear from Dave Binkard about his new game design class for kids, PODS Game Design. While teaching a game design class for kids at MSUM this summer, he saw the large amount of kids interested in game creation. With the PODS, they can now offer game design classes outside of the summer camp. Currently, Dave is running a Kickstarter campaign to help out with his business.

We also got to play test Dennis Frohlich's dice game SHIELDS at the end of the meet-up. It's a short two-player game about destroying your opponent's shields, mixing strategy and chance. Dennis unfortunately is moving to Pennsylvania next week, but we wish him and his work on SHIELDS the best of luck!

Upcoming Events and News

- Tuesday July 28th, the MSUM Planetarium is putting on its first gaming event. Come Play Artemis Spaceship-Bridge Simulator on the dome. There will be door prizes and refreshments. More info here

- Tech Tailgate was a great success last week, we had 9 meet-ups represented and over 150 people attend the tailgating at Fargo Brewing Company. Fargo Game Makers was there to represent the game making community here in Fargo-Moorhead.

June Meet-up Update

Hello everyone! I wanted to get you all up to speed on when the next meet-up will be. Due to the beginning of summer, FGM is going to be taking a little break this month, but we'll be back in full force next month.

I've been brainstorming with a few members on how we can push the group further, reaching out to the community more, and supporting all the awesome game projects happening right here in Fargo. Bringing people together and validating your hard work is the groups highest priority. I'm really excited to see what we can do.

Anyways, thank you for being a part of the Fargo Game Makers and we'll see you next month!

May Meet-Up Recap

May was our first meet-up of the summer; the sun was shining, school was finished for the semester, but that didn't stop people from coming to Fargo Game Makers.

This month's meet-up was jam packed with content. Local developer and entrepreneur Andrew Moe demoed his NDSU Innovation Challenge project called Fargo Bird. He took the flappy bird gameplay formula, but put a unique spin on it; Andrew had a deck of cards with unique bird characters that all had RFID chips on them.

By scanning the card, players could collect and play with that new character in the game. Andrew is interested in the merging of the physical and digital realms when making games. Also, it was cool to see downtown Fargo rendered in pixel art form. Fargo Bird is currently available for Android on the Google Play Store.

After Andrew's demo, the meet-up broke into two smaller groups to discuss what they have currently been working on, and a debate on the current state of the game development industry.

We had a chance to see some conceptual pixel artwork, a clever game dealing with tax season, and a 3d modeling demo video as well.

Also of note, Davin Loegering is play testing his board game Imagine Majesty this June at the next board game night at Paradox, downtown Fargo. Be sure to check it out if you like high level board games!

Thanks to everyone that came out this month, hope to see you all next month.

April Meet-up Recap and Other News

This month's meet-up, we changed it up a bit by having 3 smaller breakaway groups that focused on discussing two questions: What was something that you found inspirational this month? And in your opinion, what defines 'good' gameplay?

Discussion of these questions led to more intimate conversations about preferences and standards in the game industry. From the feedback received, this seemed to be a really fruitful meet-up for everyone, so looking forward to doing more of these smaller breakaway groups. Afterwards, everyone visited and shared what they were currently working on.

Thanks to everyone who joined this month's meet-up, hope to see you at the May meet-up!

April News and Headlines

- This summer, there is going to be a game camp for kids at MSUM, that fellow game makers are putting on, as well as one at the Inspire Innovation Lab. Very cool to see local mentors helping to inspire the next generation of game makers.
